ARABICA AND ROBUSTA

This is how we choose our favorite coffee blend.

The Arabica varieties prefer a cooler climate and are grown at altitudes between 900 and 2,000 meters; they are the best qualities from an organoleptic point of view and represent three quarters of world production. They are sweet, rich in aromas and pleasantly acidic. The caffeine content varies from 1.1% to 1.7% depending on the type.
The Robusta varieties from which the name derives are generally stronger and more resistant and are grown in the plains at altitudes between 200 and 600 meters; for these reasons they require less attention and arrive on the market at generally lower prices than Arabica qualities. With a caffeine content that varies between 2% and 4%, Robusta coffees are certainly more full-bodied, less fragrant and with a more persistent bitter aftertaste.

Having made these considerations, it would therefore seem that we Italians would not be true admirers of coffee as we are used to drinking espresso coffee with a high percentage of Robusta quality; however, our creativity and our ability to mix different varieties and origins together with the tradition of the small cup have created what today, throughout the world is known and appreciated as Italian Espresso.
